One of the best New Year’s gifts you can give yourself is the gift of health, and physical activity is central to overall wellness. Many of us set New Year’s goals, and they often involve being more active or just sticking to a more regular workout schedule. However, it is so important that these resolutions are realistic, and something that we can stick to throughout the entire year and beyond.
If you are looking for ways to be more active this year, but not sure how to get started or what goals to set, it’s not too late to set a New Year’s resolution!
Let’s take a look at five fitness New Year’s resolutions that anyone can achieve to make 2019 your healthiest year yet.
While getting up earlier in the morning may not be on the top of your priority list, getting up and getting your workout out of the way is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It also ensures that you will stick to your New Year’s goal of being more active. Once you start getting up and moving your body and noticing how much better you feel each day, it won’t become such a chore anymore, and you may actually look forward to this time alone to do something for yourself each day.
Have you been eyeing up a new form of exercise but too afraid to get started? Make this year the year you step out of your comfort zone and do something that may make you a bit uncomfortable at first. Maybe you’ve been wanting to try kickboxing or an indoor cycling class. Choose something you haven’t done before, and give it a try! Variety is the spice of life, so spicing up your exercise routine may be just what you need to stick to your goals.
It’s recommended that we all get 10,000 steps in per day to support overall wellness, so make this a goal this year. Invest in a fitness tracker or an inexpensive pedometer to track your steps each day, and get moving!
Instead of looking at your New Year’s Resolutions as goals you need to achieve over the course of an entire year, break them down each week. Every weekend, or whenever you have the time, sit down and think about what fitness goals you want to achieve in the coming week. Make a plan and write it out on your calendar. By making smaller, more realistic goals, you are more likely to stick to them.
If you are feeling adventurous and want to make a very specific fitness-related resolution this year, why not train for a 5k? Even if you have zero experience with running, training for a 5k is totally doable and you can even download apps on your phone to help coach you through it! Couch to 5k is a great option to help you get the training you need to succeed. You can also get a friend involved which not only makes it more fun, but it will help you stay on top of your goals.
While 2019 is already underway, if you are already starting to feel intimidated about the goals you set, take a step back and think about some realistic ways you can achieve your fitness goals this year.
Try using these five tips to make your fitness goals achievable, and be the healthiest version of you this year!
